Creative Confinement Winners

Congratulations to the Winners and Finalists in CREATIVE CONFINEMENT.

All of the entries can be reviewed at the links following the Winners and Finalists details. The competition had 2 parts – the OVERALL competition that included 160 entries from 13 guilds and the CHG competition with 69 entries and was restricted to CHG members.

The BEST IN SHOW for each competition was selected by Kathrin Weber of Blazing Shuttles who is also a show sponsor. Category winners were selected by popular vote. Our many thanks to Kathrin. The BEST IN SHOW winners are at the top of the list. Please take your time reviewing some very spectacular entries from our sister guilds in the southeast. Thanks to everyone who submitted in this first online show presented by Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild.

Ginkgo Curtains

BEST IN SHOW – OVERALL COMPETITION

Artist: Teresa Edmisten
Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild

Ginkgo leaves are special to my husband and me. When he suggested the curtains for the study incorporate them, I got busy sketching. The pattern is not repeated from top to bottom – definitely what computer dobby looms are made for.

This is the first of 4 curtain panels – each 48″ x 96″. The weave structure is diversified plain weave with 18/2 cottolin and sport weight Euroflax linen at 18 EPI and PPI. There are 30 pattern shafts. The draft is 2100 picks long and was sketched on an iPad then converted to a profile draft from an image, and then, ultimately the full draft.

Little Garden Girl bag

Artist: Gene Turner
Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild

This bag was woven in the Boundweave structure. It is made using 5/2 100% cotton. This bag was made specifically for my sister who likes to garden. This was fun to make because it tells a story. In addition to vegies and apple trees, there are bunnies, because every garden has them. The fence is a traditional Kentucky horse fence because this sister lives in Kentucky. There is a brown vinyl bottom. The inside has a pocket and a magnetic snap closure.

Sheep Everywhere

This Boundweave bag was woven specifically for my sister who collects sheep objects. I had a lot of fun making each row of sheep different: fuzzy, shiny, psychedelic, variegated, black, white. The bag has a separate brown vinyl bottom; there is an interior pocket and a magnetic snap closure. The handles are leather.

Purple Dahlia Mask

Artist: Leigh Skowronski
Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild

This surgical style mask has 4 layers. The 3 inner layers are made of tightly woven batik cotton fabric. The foundation of the mask includes both a nose wire channel and a side opening in the innermost layer to form a filter pocket. The outer layer of the mask is the decorative layer and is made from a scrap piece of handwoven fabric that was woven in an advancing twill design. Soft elastic cord that goes all the way around the head make the mask easy to wear.

Twined Medallion

Artist: Mary Beebee
Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild

This 7 ply waxed linen twined medallion, 6 1/2″ in diameter, is woven with miniature antique buttons and beads. 32 spokes are woven with a twining technique wrapping the 7 ply waxed linen around each spoke as it spirals outward. Antique buttons are woven in as the piece grows from the center. The piece is finished with knotted beads along the circumference. This basket making technique is a traditional Native American weaving process adapted to a modern fiber.

Vibrant Vest

Artist: Leigh Skowronski
Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild

This vest was woven from a single hand dyed 8/2 cotton warp that was 8 yards long. When dressing the loom, I flipped alternating 2” sections of the warp so that the colors would progress in opposing directions. I hadn’t counted on the fact that the purple segments would still end up pooled together. It took all 8 yards to “fussy cut” the pattern pieces to work together for the vest.
