Dorothy Raymond
Bio:
“I grew up on a farm in northern Colorado and began sewing my clothes in grade school and continued through college, law school and my career as a corporate attorney. Then, I discovered art quilting. Now retired from the law, I focus on making art.
Textiles have always fascinated me. Any piece of fabric that I encounter starts me thinking about what I can make out of it. The colors and textures are my jumping off points. Learning the principles of art made me focus on the desired end result of the artwork in process, and not just the process itself. Each artwork is more than an assemblage of pieces of fabric and stitching; each piece carries meaning.
My art has won awards at national and regional fine art shows; and can be found in many private collections. I am active in Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc., the international organization that promotes the art quilt.”
Artist Statement:
Rainbow was my first attempt at painting a spectrum of colors that change gradually from one color to another. I transformed a typical spectrum with adding the wide blue band. I experimented with different hand stitches to create a sense of flow. When finished, I realized that the hand stitching pushed the colored fabric to the background.
