Artist:
Kathy Spoering
Bio:
I have been designing and weaving tapestries for over 40 years. The tapestries are reflective of and influenced by events in my own life, yet also have found them reflect the lives of viewers, weaving us together through the images. I feel that connection as I weave.
Artist Statement:
I do not normally weave landscapes. I live in a beautiful part of the US; the desert southwest. The Nature around me often feels too big, too beautiful, too imposing for me to try to replicate or translate it in fiber. But when I hiked in the Arches National Park to an arch called ‘Tapestry Arch’ I felt the need to try to create it in my medium of tapestry. The arch not only inspired me to weave it, but required me to attempt to make the arch a tapestry.
Techniques Used: Handwoven tapestry on an upright loom.
Materials: Cotton warp, wool weft.
Measurements: 17" x 23" x .5"
