Artist:

Mercedes Michalowski

Bio:

Years ago, my grandmother taught me how to needlepoint, but did not continue the work. I have searched for years to find my ‘thing’ – I attempted many different forms of art and enjoyed the search. However, it took the pandemic to decide to take back out my hand stitched work bag (made by my grandmother) to give needlepoint another chance. I worked through an original practice piece and found I enjoyed the rhythm and cadence that it offered. I discovered that the traditional painted canvases didn’t challenge me, so I tried to create my own original designs and incorporate different stitches with no guide. I mostly use my own photos or those of my fiance for adaptations. These have further developed into landscapes featuring my home state of Michigan. I am determined to challenge the preconceived notion that needle arts are not fine art and do not have a place in the art world. My fiber art creations are modern while paying homage to their history by using traditional techniques.

Artist Statement:

This piece was created from a photo I took while on vacation. I loved the perspective of the composition and the many details. When I started my fiber art journey, I discovered that the traditional painted canvases didn’t challenge me, so I tried to create my own original designs and incorporate different stitches with no guide.

Techniques Used: The process begins with a sketch using a light-box and original photograph taken by the artist. For the actual work, traditional needlepoint stitches and techniques combined with hand mixed colors, innovative stitches and techniques to create depth and texture created by the artist. While the range of embroidery floss colors is impressive, I have often noticed that there are certain shades and hues that do not exist. In order to proceed, I mix the strands of floss until I have the hue closer to what I want. I also mix colors to indicate shadings, wear, depth, and texture. When I can, I try and use traditional stitches that mimic what object I am working on, but oftentimes, I have to think and work outside the box to create or modify stitches to better suit my needs and project. The piece is then blocked, bound using the traditional binding stitch and mounted into a shadowbox.
